Understanding the Bufo Ceremony

A Bufo Alvarius ceremony involves using the venom from the Sonoran Desert Toad or synthetic 5 MEO DMT. The ceremony includes several essential elements designed to enhance the experience and ensure safety.

Also known as the Sonoran Desert toad, and in Spanish simply ‘El Sapo,’ Bufo is short for Bufo Alvarius. This toad secretes a milky white substance that includes 5-MeO-DMT.

Unlike other strong psychedelics, Bufo usually only lasts about 20 minutes.

At Arise Retreats we provide both types of Bufo to help conserve the Sonoran Desert Toad and its home. In addition, some people who may not be able to physically handle the toad venom can safely use the synthetic version.

How Bufo Is Smoked

When Bufo Alvarius venom is smoked, the process typically involves “milking” the toads to extract the venom, which is then dried. The dried venom is smoked in a pipe, where the heat burns off the poison, allowing the individual to inhale the vapor without ingesting the toxic components.

This method is used to induce a short but intense psychedelic experience, with effects notably stronger than those induced by DMT. Choosing an experienced guide with robust safety protocols is crucial for safety and effectiveness.

Some people may have issues with their health or not be able to hold enough smoke in their lungs because of asthma or other health issues. In these cases we provide 5 Meo as a powder that is inhaled through the nose. The powdered form of 5 Meo DMT is called  ‘ The Jaguar’ and many report breakthrough ‘Ego Death’ experiences with this safer form of 5.

What Happens When You Take Bufo?

Initially, upon administration—typically through inhalation, the compound rapidly enters the bloodstream, leading to an almost immediate onset of effects. Users often report a swift departure from their usual sense of reality, propelled into an altered state of consciousness.

The physical response can be intense; some may experience a temporary increase in heart rate and blood pressure, sensations of warmth or cold, and a profound alteration in their sensory experiences. This physical shift paves the way for profound psychological transformations that follow.

Psychologically, the experience can vary widely among individuals. For some, the reaction can be vigorous, with manifestations like snarling, singing, or even screaming, signifying a deep, primal connection or release.

This intense expression contrasts with those who enter a tranquil, almost unconscious state, where the experience is characterized by serene detachment from the physical self.

Some people may not remember the experience afterward but then report that they feel as if a heavy burden has been lifted from them. They find that they can make positive changes in their lives and forge deeper connections with loved ones.
